Variable description

Here you will find a description of the variables in the .csv & SPSS export for each test in the VTS.

Test forms: Unless otherwise specified, the variables and their descriptions are identical across all test forms. Any test form-specific variations are explicitly documented.

Legacy tests: Certain tests that are based on older technology do not have a .csv export with item-level data, these tests are: MLS, AHA, BACO, INHIB, LEVE, NBN, SWITCH, VISGED, WRBTV.

Item-level variables: Variables may contain placeholders such as y or xx, representing sequential identifiers. The exact meaning of these identifiers (e.g., item number or test form number) depends on the context and is described with the respective variable.

Example: EVxxx ... Evaluation of the response to item xxx → EV001 … Evaluation of response to item 1

DT

Variable description

Main variables - Test form 1/2

  • ZV - Reactive stress tolerance: Number of accurate (= on-time plus delayed) reactions. Only one correct reaction per stimulus is counted even if the button is pressed repeatedly. The total number of on-time and delayed responses is therefore always the same as or less than the number of stimuli presented.

Subsidiary variables - Test form 1/2

  • F - Number of incorrect reactions: Each inappropriate reaction to a stimulus is regarded as an incorrect reaction. If a correct reaction and one or more incorrect reactions are given within the stimulus presentation time, one correct reaction and all the incorrect reactions will be counted.

  • A - Number of missed reactions: A stimulus is regarded as missed if the subject does not react within the stimulus presentation time or if the reaction made during that time is a delayed response to the preceding stimulus, and if he does not make a delayed response during the presentation of the subsequent item. The variable Number of missed reactions is the total number of stimuli to which no response was made.

Additional Information - Test form 1/2

  • MDRT - Median reaction time (sec.): Median of all correct (on-time and delayed) reaction times. The reaction time (in seconds) is the time from the appearance of a stimulus to the pressing of a button on the response panel.

  • R - Number of reactions: Total number of correct and incorrect responses; sum of all responses made

  • S - Number of stimuli: Serves as a control variable indicating how many stimuli were presented. The faster the respondent’s working speed, the shorter the stimulus presentation time; this variable is therefore higher for subjects who work fast. The number of stimuli is not the same as the number of reactions since more than one reaction may be made to a stimulus.

Main variables - Test form 3

  • MDRTA - Ability to react: Time from the appearance of a stimulus to the pressing of a button on the response panel. The variable specifies the median of all correct reaction times.

Subsidiary variables - Test form 3

  • ZVA - Number of correct reactions (Action mode): Number of accurate reactions; only one correct reaction per stimulus is counted even if the button is pressed repeatedly

  • FA - Number of incorrect reactions (Action mode): Each inappropriate reaction to a stimulus is regarded as an incorrect reaction. If a correct reaction and one or more incorrect reactions are given within the stimulus presentation time, one correct reaction and all the incorrect reactions will be counted.

Additional Information - Test form 3

  • ZG - Number of on-time reactions (Reaction mode): A reaction is regarded as on-time if it is correct and occurs within the stimulus presentation time. If a correct reaction and one or more incorrect reactions are given within the stimulus presentation time, all the incorrect reactions are counted as well as an on-time reaction.

  • VG - Number of delayed reactions (Reaction mode): A delayed reaction is a correct reaction to the preceding stimulus during the presentation time of a new stimulus, when no correct reaction to the preceding stimulus has yet been given, that is also after incorrect reactions during the presentation time of the preceding stimulus. If a reaction (correct or incorrect) has already been made to the current item, it is no longer possible to make a delayed reaction to the preceding item.

  • FG - Number of incorrect reactions (Reaction mode): Each inappropriate reaction to a stimulus is regarded as an incorrect reaction. If a correct reaction and one or more incorrect reactions are given within the stimulus presentation time, one correct reaction and all the incorrect reactions will be counted.
